Air conditioning

Air conditioning installation, servicing and repair

Cooling for warm bedrooms, home offices, conservatories, shops and offices. We are F-Gas certified, so we can legally install, service and repair systems that use refrigerant, from a single wall unit to a multi-split system serving several rooms.

Systems we install

Single split

One indoor unit connected to one outdoor unit. The usual choice for a single bedroom, home office or small shop.

Multi-split

Several indoor units, each with its own control, running from one outdoor unit. Keeps the outside of the building tidier when you want to cool more than one room.

Heat pump air conditioning

Most modern split systems can also heat. In spring and autumn, an air-to-air system can be an efficient way of taking the chill off a room.

How we install

We start by looking at the room: its size, which way it faces, how much glass it has and what heat comes from equipment and people. That decides the capacity, so the unit is neither struggling on a hot day nor oversized and short-cycling.

We then agree positions for the indoor and outdoor units, the route for the refrigerant pipework and the condensate drain, and the electrical supply. The pipework is pressure tested and evacuated with a vacuum pump before refrigerant is released, which is what makes a system reliable for years. We commission the system, check its performance and show you how to use the controls.

If you live in a flat or a listed or conservation-area building, check with your factor, landlord or the council before you commit, because outdoor units and wall penetrations may need permission. We can give you the details they ask for.

Servicing

An annual service keeps the system efficient and the air clean:

  • Filters cleaned or replaced
  • Indoor and outdoor coils cleaned
  • Condensate drain and pump checked
  • Refrigerant pressures and temperatures measured
  • Electrical connections and controls tested
  • Leak checks and records, where the system's refrigerant charge requires them

Repairs

Common faults include weak or warm airflow, water dripping from the indoor unit, ice on the pipework, unusual noises or smells, and units that will not start or keep stopping. Loss of cooling is often a refrigerant leak, which must be found and repaired before the system is recharged: simply topping up refrigerant is not a repair. Only an F-Gas certified engineer may work on the refrigerant circuit.

Air conditioning questions

Do I really need air conditioning in Scotland?

Most homes do not need it most of the year. It is worth considering for rooms that overheat: loft conversions, south-facing rooms with large windows, conservatories and home offices full of equipment. Many systems also heat efficiently, which helps make the case.

Can I use a portable unit instead?

Portable units are cheaper to buy but noisier, less efficient and less effective, because the hot air hose leaks heat back in. A split system is the better option for a room you use often.

How noisy is the outdoor unit?

Modern units are relatively quiet, but placement matters. We position outdoor units to keep noise away from bedroom windows, yours and your neighbours'.
