Heating

Central heating that heats every room evenly

Cold radiators, noisy pipes, a system that takes an hour to warm up, or controls nobody understands: we repair, upgrade and install central heating systems, and look after the boilers, underfloor heating and air conditioning that go with them.

How it works

Your heating is one loop of water

The boiler heats water, a pump pushes it out along the flow pipe to each radiator, and cooler water comes back along the return pipe to be heated again. Each radiator valve controls how much hot water that room gets.

Because it is one loop, a problem in one place shows up elsewhere: sludge settling in the radiators furthest from the boiler, air collecting at the top of upstairs radiators, or an unbalanced system where the first radiators get hot and the last ones stay lukewarm. Fixing the cause, rather than one symptom, is what makes a system comfortable again.

Heating work we carry out

Radiators

New and replacement radiators, moving radiators during a renovation, upgrading to larger or double-panel radiators where a room never gets warm, towel rails, and replacing worn valves with thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs). We size radiators to the room's heat loss rather than to whatever fits the old pipe positions.

Power flushing and system cleaning

Radiators that are cold at the bottom, a boiler that is noisy or keeps overheating, and dark water when you bleed a radiator are classic signs of sludge. A power flush circulates cleaning chemicals through the system at high flow to dislodge it. We then add inhibitor to protect the system and, where there is not one already, fit a magnetic filter to catch new debris. Not every system needs a full power flush, and we will tell you if a gentler clean is enough.

Balancing and fault finding

If some rooms are hot and others cold, the system may simply need balancing: adjusting the lockshield valves so each radiator gets its share of hot water. We also trace airlocks, failed pumps, sticking motorised valves and faulty diverter valves.

Heating controls

Programmable and smart thermostats, room thermostats, TRVs and heating zones let you heat the rooms you use, when you use them. We fit and set up controls and show you how to use them, which matters more than the brand on the box.

Heating questions

Why is my radiator cold at the top but warm at the bottom?

That is usually trapped air. Bleeding the radiator with a radiator key normally fixes it. If you have a combi or sealed system, check the boiler pressure afterwards and top it up if it has dropped. If the radiator needs bleeding every week, something is drawing in air or producing gas, and it is worth having it checked.

Why is my radiator warm at the top but cold at the bottom?

That pattern usually means sludge has settled in the bottom of the radiator. A system clean or power flush and a magnetic filter are the usual answer.

Is it cheaper to leave the heating on low all the time?

In most homes it is cheaper to heat when you need it, using a timer and thermostat. The exception is during freezing spells, when keeping the heating on low protects pipes, especially if you are away.
