Boilers, heating and plumbing in Blantyre
Blantyre grew as a mill and mining community and is known as the birthplace of David Livingstone. Today it is mostly a residential town of former council houses, private semis and new-build estates, each with its own heating needs.

Upgrading heating in former council houses
Much of Blantyre's housing was built by the council after the war, and many of those homes are now privately owned. Over the decades their heating has often been changed more than once, so it is not unusual to find a newer boiler connected to old radiators, valves and pipe runs.
When a boiler in one of these houses reaches the end of its life, many owners choose a combi. It frees up the airing cupboard, removes the loft tank and gives mains-pressure hot water. We can handle the boiler installation and advise whether the radiators and pipework should be updated at the same time.
Some homes that were refitted in the 1970s and 1980s use narrow microbore pipework to the radiators. It works, but it blocks more easily with sludge, so a magnetic filter and a clean system are well worth having when a new boiler goes in.
Small repairs that are worth not ignoring
A dripping overflow pipe outside the house usually means a toilet cistern or loft tank valve is not shutting off properly. A slow drip under the sink can soak a cupboard base for months before anyone notices. Our plumbing repairs cover these jobs, along with taps, toilets, showers and blocked waste pipes.
New-build homes
Newer developments around Blantyre tend to have system boilers, unvented cylinders and sometimes underfloor heating on the ground floor. These are efficient systems, but they need annual servicing, and the unvented cylinder in particular should be checked by a qualified engineer.
Breakdowns and urgent repairs
If your boiler stops, check first that the pressure gauge reads around 1 to 1.5 bar when cold, that the power is on, and that the thermostat is calling for heat. If it still will not fire, book a boiler repair rather than resetting it over and over.
For a burst pipe or water coming through a ceiling, turn off the stopcock and call our emergency plumbers.

Questions from Blantyre
Can a combi boiler go where my old boiler was?
Often it can, which keeps the cost of new pipework down. It depends on the flue route and space for the condensate pipe. If the old position is unsuitable, we will suggest the most practical alternative.
My new-build has underfloor heating downstairs. Does it need servicing?
The pipes in the floor need little attention, but the manifold, pump and controls benefit from an occasional check, and the boiler and cylinder feeding them need their annual service. If one zone stays cold, a stuck actuator on the manifold is a common cause.
Do you cover the whole of Blantyre, including the newer estates?
Yes. We work across Blantyre and the surrounding towns, in older council-built streets and new developments alike. Tell us the type of home and the problem when you call, and the engineer will come prepared.
