Gas, heating and plumbing work in Coatbridge

Coatbridge grew rapidly as the centre of Scotland's iron industry, earning the name the Iron Burgh, and the Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life tells that story. Its homes reflect that history, from sandstone tenements to the council housing that followed.

Replacing an old back boiler

Many houses built or refitted from the 1960s to the 1980s were given a back boiler: a boiler hidden behind a gas fire in the living room fireplace. Some are still running in Coatbridge, but they are inefficient by modern standards and parts are increasingly hard to source.

Replacing one usually means removing the back boiler and fire, fitting a modern combi or system boiler elsewhere in the house, and often taking out the loft tanks and hot water cylinder too. You can then have the chimney capped and vented, or have a new gas fire fitted in its place. Our Gas Safe registered engineers handle the boiler installation and the gas fire and pipework in one job.

Tenement flats

In older tenement buildings, water pressure on the top floors can be weaker, especially at busy times of day, which affects how well a combi boiler and shower perform. Shared pipes in the close, stopcocks in unexpected places and decades of alterations are all part of the picture. We look at the whole supply before recommending changes, and our plumbing services cover everything from new bathroom pipework to replacing tired taps and valves.

Letting a flat in town

There are many rented flats in Coatbridge, and each one needs an annual landlord gas safety certificate. We test every gas appliance, flue and the installation pipework, and give you a record to pass to your tenants.

Between tenancies is also a good time to service the boiler, check the shower and taps, and make sure the stopcock is easy to find, so a new tenant knows what to do if water starts to leak.

Questions from Coatbridge

How do I know if I have a back boiler?

If your gas fire sits in a fireplace and there is no separate boiler anywhere else in the house, but you still have radiators and hot water, you very likely have a back boiler behind the fire. Usually there is also a hot water cylinder in an airing cupboard.

Can the old chimney be used for a new gas fire?

Often it can, but the chimney has to be checked and may need a liner, depending on the fire you choose. Some modern gas fires are balanced flue or flueless types that do not rely on a chimney at all. We will check what suits your fireplace.

Why is the water pressure so low in my top-floor flat?

In older buildings the supply pipe may be narrow or partly furred up, and neighbours drawing water at the same time reduce what reaches the top. We can measure the pressure and flow and suggest options, such as replacing old supply pipework.
